STUDENT-RUN LAB MEDIA

About this project, and the person behind it.

LowToxLab is a student-run media + lab project about the chemistry of everyday life: dorm air, skincare, food packaging, period products, online attention, and the small exposures that stack up around Gen Z.

Why I started this

I'm a 19-year-old undergraduate chemistry student at a U.S. university. This site started because I couldn't find what I was looking for. I wanted to know what was actually in my dorm air after I moved in and got headaches for two weeks. I wanted to know whether the "non-toxic" candle my roommate kept burning was actually safer. What I found instead was two camps yelling at each other. One side was telling me everything in my room was poisoning me. The other side was telling me to stop being chemically illiterate. Neither of them was actually testing my dorm. So I'm doing it myself. And writing it down here.

What this site is

A media + lab + toolkit project for people in their late teens and twenties who want to think clearly about the chemistry of their daily lives without being talked down to and without being scared into buying a $40 deodorant.

CONTEXT

Same age, same context

Most "clean living" content is made by parents writing about their kids. I'm a college student writing about my dorm.

TOOLS

Actual lab instruments

GC-MS, FTIR, PID. Equipment that gives real data instead of vibes. When I can test directly, I do. When I cannot, I say so.

STANCE

Not in either tribe

I don't think every chemical is dangerous, and I don't think every concern is "chemophobia." Specific evidence about specific compounds is what matters.

What this site is NOT

It's not medical advice. I'm a chemistry student, not a doctor. It's not a fear factory. If a study is preliminary, I'll tell you. If a panic is overblown, I'll tell you that too. It's not affiliate spam. I won't link a product I haven't personally tested, used, or clearly researched. It's not finished. This is a project I'm building in public, while in school.
